Well today was a real mixed bag. On the one hand, I cracked the neck of my real guitar project. But on the other hand, THIS came in the mail today:
(note the snare)
For the record, that is a Pintech Concertcast ST 10" mesh head snare.
Now, I know what you're saying: "But Jumpman, in that big thread on the RB forums about what triggers work with Ion, they said the Pintech Concercast series was a no-go!" And you would be right. But are we not modders? Why yes we are!
OK it's getting late so I'll cut to it I got this sucker off ebay fairly cheap in good, although, non-working condition. The wires somehow came loose from the main piezo right at the solder points. "Big whoop", I say, because I know they don't jive with Ion anyway, so I replaced it with:
Also courtesy of ebay. Put it all back together and I'm happy to say it works GREAT!
BTW, just as a test, I did re-connect the original Pintech piezo (which was tiny) just to see how good/bad it was. It was pretty bad. If I hit it solidly near the center it would register -- but that's about it. With the UFO piezo, everything registers except hits that are very near the edge. Let the stick fall onto the head and it will register 4+ bounces consistently.
Anyways, very happy about how this experiment turned out. Now if I can figure out how to fix my guitar... |

Great job! That snare looks quite good. I will definitely replace my ION pads once I come back from vacation next week. _________________ My Flickr Photos |

Well that's fucking awesome! If I don't end up getting 3 Roland PD-80's to replace my Ion yellow/blue/green toms, I'll probably go with Pintechs since I can get such great deals from Hope Drums now. _________________ WARNING: Our group is not a friend of Gear Acquisition Syndrome (G.A.S.) Jumpman,
What are your thoughts on the snare? How does it feel, does it mount easy, etc. |

OK, I don't have a ton of experience here. For example, I've never played on Roland or Yamaha drums of any type, so I can't compare to them, and did not play at all prior to RB. But having said that, this seems like a very nice edrum pad. You can adjust the tension and therefore the amount of rebound, which is nice. I have it set pretty tight, for high sensitivity and lots of rebound, which is going to take some getting used to, but I like it.
Anyways, I've only played a few songs on it but so far very happy. Now I'm thinking of buying an 8" pintech mesh head (~$25) from Hope Drums to convert one of my Ion pads, and if that goes well, 2 more of the same. |

I have a 10" concertcast on the way, but was wondering if you have listed somewhere what Piezo from radioshack will work? (Running out of money... saving shipping. lol)
The one I have coming is a dual trigger... can I just plug in a mono cable after I replace the main piezo, or did I just make a mistake buying this?
Thanks! _________________

What exactly are the mesh heads for? They don't seem like complete replacement pads...do you just attach it to your current pad somehow? _________________ Drums - Expert

Hi Davidshek,
I see you are looking at the PD-80s...question is there some reason you are looking at single triggger pads for your toms?
Is there any reason not to get the more expensive dual trigger, PD-85s for the toms?
Does one ever do rims shots on toms?
I am a much better shopper than drummer, obviously.
I love my PDX-8 and am thinking about mesh for my toms too, so appreciate you insight.
Thx. |

If all I'm using them for is RB with the Ion controller, there is no reason whatsoever to get PD-85s. The Ion controller can only recognize a single zone anyway.
If you're going to be using them with a brain that supports dual-zone trigger pads, sure, go for the PD-85.
Rim shots on toms are usually exceedingly difficult due to the angle at which they are most typically placed. I don't think I've ever actually done a rim shot on my acoustics. _________________ WARNING: Our group is not a friend of Gear Acquisition Syndrome (G.A.S.) Anonymous.

Perfect, thank you.
Yes I got a drum brain that supports rim shots (dual zone pads), whether or not I'll ever be able to actually hit one, who cares, but getting the 85s will provide the opportunity. (I want it all )
Oops one more question...do you know how significant is the difference between the PD-80R and the PD-85? I can't tell the difference in the specs...
Thanks again for your advice. |

The difference would be age and look. The PD-80R was the first dual-zone mesh pad that Roland released. They replaced it soon afterward with the PD-85.
| Quote: | Q: What are the differences between the PD-85 and the PD-80R?
A: The PD-85 employs the same design as the PD-80R, but with the following cosmetic differences:
1. Two shell color variations (black for the PD-85BK and white for the PD-85WT)
2. Different colors for holders (chrome/silver color for the PD-85 and black for the PD-80R) |

Hey Jumpman...
I just got my Concertcast today, and swapped out the main piezo, but it isn't registering at all. How did you adhere the peizo to the base and the foam to the piezo? Did you use some type of glue, like Gorrila glue? Or double stick tape?
I'm going to head to radio snack and buy another piezo to try again.
Thanks for any and all help! _________________
