I think it may depend on what brand of mesh heads you use, but I did not use hangar tape with the Pintech mesh heads in my version of the mod. _________________ My custom guitars |

By shaving down the screw posts and removing the color ring. _________________ My custom guitars |

I just successfully did this mod, and wanted to share what I did differently than the original post. They work fantastically right now, and to me they feel much more like real drums. Many thanks to karmajack for the initial post and the other posters for other ideas!
So I recently moved, and my Ion kit didn't quite make it. The blue and green drums had very spotty performance, and dead zones right in the center. I trained myself to hit the edges of the drums while I was gathering materials to do this mod, as I figured the piezo was still clearly working, so I could do this mod and return the drums to their former glory.
Hanger tape was quite difficult to find, as many other posters have said; I'm thinking that only Lowe's still sells straight steel hanger tape -- also known as steel strapping, apparently, if the term "hanger tape" gets you blank stares at the hardware store. Being Canadian, there are no Lowe's around, but I found some plastic hanger tape that looked the same as the steel stuff at Home Depot and figured it would work fine (it has worked fine so far, for the record).
I managed to pick up two Roland MH-8's at Just Drums in Toronto. (They only had two, but they'll special order more if you ask -- they were $35 cdn each)
I've been using my Ion set regularly for probably a year now; perhaps all that use made the tape in the drum extra bonded, because I had troubles separating the rubber and metal from the plastic disc (and that was even using the amazing adhesive remover Undu). I tore the rubber thing a few times, but it hasn't seemed to be a problem thus far.
A few other differences were that my plastic disks were a bit smaller than most, I guess, because it kind of fell into the recess in the bottom of the drum, so I flipped it over and used the double sided tape to attach it to the metal disk and then attach the metal disk to the drum body. I also trimmed about a centimetre from the rubber before I put it over the plastic disk so that it wouldn't bunch up (it seemed a bit big). I also used the double sided tape to attach the rubber to the metal plate.
All of that added a bit of height, I guess, so after trying to put the head on with earplugs and seeing that they stuck our a fair bit, I cut a little bit off the top of the earplugs. This probably helped in any case, and it flattened out the tops (they were rounded initially).
I found it quite difficult to use a utility knife to cut the bolt holes, so I used a small hacksaw and a file to cut it down and make it relatively even (it doesn't seem to matter if they're a little bit uneven, really). This makes a bit of a mess with plastic shavings all around, but you can just vacuum it all up before you move on.
The rest went pretty much according to plan, and yeah, I'm very satisfied! The drums went from barely working to working much better than the two drums that survived the move -- which I'm going to do this mod to as soon as I can pick up two more MH-8's!
Oh, and I actually injured myself like Kineticartist did Except I cut a bit of my middle finger when I was snipping off a piece of double sided tape... Not my proudest moment. |

Glad you were able to revive your drums and that you enjoy the mesh heads. The plastic hanger tape sounds interesting and may work out better in the long run actually. I haven't had the problem, but I do have a slight worry about the tape around the metal tape wearing out, then eventually cutting into the head.
It's cool to see so many varients of this come about after all this time. All the collective efforts and ideas that went into this mod has definately paid off and spread well beyond my expectations. _________________ Don't hate...Create. |

i think to hard would be a bad thing.
then you mesh wouldnt work out as well.
i found some foam out of a old practice pad and used a cymbal arm.
that i heated over my gas stove(not sure if electric would work) then burned a perfect pillar.
softness can be a bad thing but you have to find a happy medium.
they say magic erasers, and ear plugs work great.

Just did the mesh head mod, (thanks Bobby!), and .... wow. Definitely worth the time and $ to upgrade those Ion head to mesh.
I feel like a veil has been lifted finally. Rimshots are going to be a pain until everything is situated, but I have to say it again: wow.
Its... its... its just more gooder! Huge thanks to the authors and contributors to this thread! _________________ A man a plan a canal Panama! |
