E-Drums Recomendation

I know you guys must get asked this all the time, but here goes.

I have a PS-3 with RockBand 2 and I looking to replace the stock RB2 drums with e-drums.

I'm know everyone had their own opinion's and all but being a newbie to e-drums I have no idea what to look at.

I would like to stay at under under $1000.00.

I think if I go over that my wife will have me sleeping in my car.

Most of the use of these drums would be with RB2 and occasionally playing along with music. Maybe a 70-30 split.

So I'm looking for something that can be easily adapted to being able to work with RB2 but not too much of a hassle to make them back into e-drums for use with recorded non RB2 music.

I have been reading on here for a bit and really like the enthusiasm and passion you all seem to have for this.

and then getting a Drum Rocker module like the one here. http://www.ionaudio.com/content306118

I would tend to agree with KA. I bought my ION set in September. The only drawback is that I've spent at least another $300 in upgrades (4 Pintech cymbals, Pintech mesh heads, Roland rack, RockPedal) that if I had to do it again, I most likely would've forked over the extra cash and gotten a better set.

Still, whatever you do, check with Bobby @ NEMS first. He won't steer ya wrong and his customer service is top notch.

My 2¢ is that I wouldn't jump right on the ION bandwagon and look at what you really need and want from this kit. This will help avoid spending twice the amount by upgrading the kit piecemeal over the coming months.

What do you want from your in game experience? Do you just want a higher quality drum controller or do you want a bit more intelligence to it? Do you want to play with the Hi Hat mapped to Yellow/Blue for Closed/Open or is that not something that you are willing to pay for? What about properly mapping the sounds to the triggers within the game so you can hear what the e-drums are producing for what is on the screen? Sure, these are all fantastic features and add lots to the game, but they also cost $$$ so it's up to you what attributes your e-kit needs to have vs want to have. Check out 3.0: MIDI/Drum Modules/e-Drums of the FAQ to explore some of the options available to you and functionality of the kits.

For playing outside the game, what type of features are important to you? Do you want to record you play as a MIDI file and then play it back on the drums / keyboard / computer? Are multiple zones (Rim/Bow/Bell) important to you on the cymbals? What about adjustability of the sound module? They range from a few canned drum kits to being able to adjust almost ever nuisance of the kit, such as Room Size, Material, etc.

My typical advice is if it's just a Drum Controller Replacement, the ION Drum Rocker Is fine. The Moment you want to convert to a e-drum to play outside the game, the ION upgrades start poring in and it will most likely be more cost effective to purchase a higher end e-drum kit and just throw a GHWT MIDI Bridge, Sethbox, Midirocker, etc.

If you can, goto a music store and play everything you can get your hands on b/c it's tough to drop $1K on an e-kit cold based on some guys advice on a forum. That said, the Yamaha DTXpress IV is really cheap these days, coming in at $800 at most sites. The sound module is fantastic for a kit in that price range but it does lack some hardware that it's bigger brother (Special V2) has; a TP-120 Snare and a RHH-135 HH, PCY-155, which are all fantastic adds down the road but not needed for day one.

If you can push over the $1000 mark and move to $1300 either the Yamaha DTXpress IV Special V2 or the Roland TD-9 are exceptional purchases. I prefer the Hardware of the Yamaha and the Roland's sound module at that price, but that's just me.

dblbogey, these guys will definitely not lead you astray.

SirPuttsAlot is right, your decisions will base heavily on your needs for the kit.

You can get a nice new Alesis DM6 kit for a decent priace and add the appropriate ION Drum Rocker Module if you want if you want a not-too-pricey option under your budget.

I'm hoping to get the DM6 Kit online today.

And just to throw yet another option into the mix, there's also the Simmons SD7PK, which can be found for under $600. With that + an Ion brain (or Sethbox or MIDI Rocker LX), you'd get everything you're looking for as well.

Well I pulled the trigger and ordered the Alesis DM6's.

Hopefully I will be getting them this week.

I already have a partially torn right rotator cuff tear.

I'm sure banging away on my new toy will play hell with that, but I can't wait to enjoy the pain.

yea i will definitely be watching this space since i am in the same boat. after modding my rb2 kit i am thinking about jumping to an entry level e-drum kit and want to be able to play rb with it.
