I was just curious, with all of the talk about how many of you "kids" were going to college now, how's everyones semester coming? Since I've gotten accepted to medical school I've been working twice as hard on my outside research to get it published before I have no time, and I'm now going to school from 6am-5pm. It's by far the most miserable thing I've ever had to do for school. I guess I'm looking at it like preparation for MD school in the fall...
But with only two real classes, it still isn't too bad. What classes are you guys taking, do you like them, are they easy or hard? I have Macromolecular Biophysics and Public Epidemiology in Response to Toxic Contamination. They're nightmares, and I love them dearly. |

As I've mentioned before, this is my first semester of college ever, and so far if I had to describe the experience in a word, it would be "weird". I shouldn't be, but I was quite surprised at how big of a deal pretty much every professor made on the first day about shutting off your cell phones and no texting in class. Apparently I AM the ignorant one thinking that was common sense, or at least common courtesy. As if to further prove my ignorance, there are dumbasses that still insist on instant messaging with their phones. I like the professors that kick them out.
Anyway, since I was a little late in making my decision to go to school, class availability was getting pretty limited by the time I started registering. As a result, my schedule is pretty split up, and I have to make 2 trips to school each day. Monday - Thursday I've got a morning or early afternoon class, and a night class. Mon. - Wed. the night class is at a different campus than the others, too. Friday I've got one late afternoon class.
I've already completed a 3 week short term Intro to Psychology class before the semester started, and the professor made that class almost impossible to get less than an A. For the rest of the semester, my plate is filled with Intro to Sociology, Intro to Philosophy, Intermediate Algebra, English Composition I, Intro to Criminal Justice, Gender, Race, & Class (Women's Studies), and Music Appreciation.
I think Philosophy has to be my toughest class of all. Not only is the subject a difficult one in general, but that class also has the fewest scoring opportunities of all my classes. 3 tests, and a research paper that he won't assign to us until much later in the semester are the only 4 things that will make our grades for the semester. I imagine that most college classes will end up scoring like that, and I may be a bit spoiled in my other classes that have an assignment to turn in every other week that get graded, in addition to the tests. I'm also not feeling too confident in that class as I'm not sure if I'm grabbing all of the concepts I'm supposed to be. That class really fucks with my mind.
On the other end of the scale, my Women's Studies class has to be the easiest of all. I still can't believe there's an academic subject devoted to Women's Studies. Part of the reason I'm taking it is because it knocks out 2 requirements I need with one class, and part of the reason I'm taking it is to see for myself what the hell do you study in a Women's Studies class. So far it's been the history and evolution of the social status of man and woman. The class itself is mostly group discussion about thoughts and feelings about whatever. It's a very 'girly' class, and the professor even says so, stating that "most guys only take this class to check out the chicks." In any case, the class is a lot of writing. We are to keep a weekly journal, chronicling your thoughts on whatever, and also find an article a week that relates to the class, and write our thoughts on it. Those get turned in twice during the semester and count as the mid term and final exams. Each week we are given an article to read from the book, and must write a "Thought Paper" on the article, how did it make us feel. And in class, we usually watch a video of some sort, and then we, yup, you guessed it, write a paper on how we feel about what the video discussed. This class is a complete joke, but I'm all for easy A's while they exist.
The rest of my classes are pretty easy. There's quite a bit of work to do in them, but still easy. I feel pretty good about what I'm doing here. I'm not too thrilled about the schedule I lined up, but hopefully this will be the only semester that's so spread out. I'll be doing early registration from day one next time! |
